Residents ‘Gave a Hoot’
Riverwood Audubon recently hosted, as part of their “Living with Nature” series, a visit from the Peace River Wildlife Center. Residents were able to meet Susan Gilleo, outreach coordinator, and John and Diane Hime, wildlife rehabilitators from New York, who both work closely with PRWC during the months they are in Florida. Everyone was treated with a visit by Luna the screech owl; a barred owl named Maggie; and Annie, a great horned owl. The presenters shared information about each of the owls. They told the audience about the wonderful work that PRWC does for our community. Discussion also focused on what to do when one finds an injured animal, how the folks at PRWC rehabilitate the various animals, and the many services they provide. Larry Lancette, Riverwood Audubon’s president, presented a check to PRWC for $1,150 as a result of the proceeds earned from sales of the book, “Reflections of Riverwood.” The book was suggested by Anita Baltierra, of Riverwood Realty. She was looking for a gift to give her clients who purchased a home in Riverwood and brought up the idea of creating a “coffeetable” book. A few months later, the 165-page book was created from the efforts of Carole Morgan. There were 66 resident contributors and more than 800 photos, as well as creative writing pieces and photos of artistic mediums. Larry Lancette also presented a check for $165 from a 50/50 raffle, which was sponsored by one of the Riverwood Men’s golf leagues. Carole Morgan presented a copy of “Reflections of Riverwood” to PRWC officials. Some of the folks attending the presentation also made contributions. Thank you to those who “Gave a Hoot” and helped to support Peace River Wildlife Center.
