Riverwood—A Green Community

Did you know that Riverwood is the first private community in Florida and the third entity in the state of Florida to receive the Green Community Award for ongoing green initiatives? Thanks to the efforts of the newly formed Riverwood Audubon, this prestigious recognition was named in the late fall of 2013.
Under the leadership of RCA Environmental Chairman and Riverwood Audubon Sustainability Coordinator Larry Lancette, along with the guidance of Riverwood Environmental Manager Russ Hoffman, Riverwood Audubon began “Working toward Certification with Audubon International” nearly one year ago. Members of Peace River Audubon Society have joined forces with Riverwood members in presenting educational workshops and guiding local wildlife walks in 2014. With binoculars in-hand and scopes on tripods, birders have assisted eager birdwatchers in spotting nearly 50 species of Southwest Florida birds, as well as an array of migratory feathered friends.
Sponsored field trips and workshops are only the “tip of the beak,” as progress continues with the second phase of certification. Through two Riverwood fundraisers and business and community support, Riverwood Audubon will soon be purchasing an interactive, educational medium for Riverwood residents and guests.
